What is a 529? is the first video of a series of two videos designed to help increase the awareness of Maryland 529’s college savings plans and the enrollments to those plans. The video aims to explain the basic concept of a 529 plan.
I started the design of What is a 529? by sketching each frame of the video on paper first. After that, I designed all the styleframes in Photoshop and put together a storyboard with suggested animation before handing the files over to a skilled motion graphic designer, who then animated and completed it with the audio and the voiceover. The video went through multiple thorough rounds of feedback and revision to ensure that we got all the details legally correct, but the result matched the style we envisioned in the beginning and fulfilled Maryland 529’s requirements for a friendly yet detailed and informative video. From this video, I successfully set up a color system that made it easier to remember and distinguish between Maryland 529’s two plans, using orange for the Maryland College Investment Plan and blue for the Maryland Prepaid College Trust.
